A Songwriters’ Round of Meaningful Music
Updated June 15
"Summer (Mostly) Thursdays" continues with local and regional singer/songwriters Sara Thomsen (Minnesota), Joel Glickman (Wisconsin), and Michael "Laughing Fox" Charette (Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians). This concert includes premier performances of new songs written specifically for "Summer (Mostly) Thursdays" expressing personal perspectives on life lived near Lake Superior and Bayfield.
Growing up on the shores of Lake Superior, Laughing Fox is inspired by her beauty. He spends a great deal of time making and playing traditional Native American Flutes, using the traditional wisdom of the Anishinaabe people in his art in the most respectful of ways. Laughing Fox has been playing the Native American Flute for 8 years and believes that each flute embodies its own spirit by the sound it makes and that the flute and its music can be calming even to the most troubled of souls.
Joel Glickman has taught music at Northland College in Ashland since 1974. Playing Five string banjo and working as a singer-songwriter are significant sideline endeavors. Joel produced a CD of original songs ("Ever Since You Went Away", Heartistry Music, 2003) and describes his style as contemporary folk song influenced by an eclectic mix of older folk styles, blues, jazz, Latin American, classical -- whatever is out there that seems to fit the moment or purpose. Song settings range from local to far-off places. Taken as a whole, he thinks of his music as "new American songs."
"Sara Thomsen's soulful voice, poetic lyrics and unforgettable melodies cut through to the heart and the soul of human experience," proclaims the Minnesota Women's Press. With a voice rich as the best the best mid-west soil, Sara's songs carry you inward and outward - in, to the particulars of your own life, and out into the shared humanity of us all. Her performance style is easygoing and full of humor and depth, capturing the audience's engagement. Sara's music gently enfolds and unfolds the listener.
This concert is sponsored in part by the Family of Mary Dobson and the Apostle Island Area Community Fund of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation. There is no admission charge, but free will offerings are encouraged and gratefully accepted. A modest reception follows the concert. Please call 715-682-3272 or 715-779-5490 for more information.
