Return of the Black Bastian Trio: Waters Ripple and Flow
"Summer (Mostly) Thursdays" ends its 2011 season with Bayfield's favorite tenor Bill Bastian, violinist Laurie Bastian, and pianist Sam Black.
"I will open with a lovely arrangement of the Czech Folk song, 'Waters Ripple and Flow,' that many women sang in choral form in the 60's," ays Sam, "and then Bill will sing the 'Water Mill' by R. Vaughn Williams as well as the 'Five Sea Chanties' by Celius Daugherty, which includes 'Across the Western Ocean' and 'Shenandoah'." A few of Schubert's moody water songs from 'Die schone Mullerin' (The Beautiful Miller's wife) will also be heard, along with the 'Auf Dem Strom' (On the River) piece for violin, piano, and tenor which is Schubert at his very best. The program continues with Laurie performing a few of her favorites: Op. 75 Dvorak, 'Three Romantic Pieces,' and the first two 'Canciones Valencias' by J. Roderigo.
"We love returning to Bayfield and sharing our music," says Bill Bastian, "and Sam is eager to put his hands on the Mason-Hamlin in a serious manner." The newly refurbished Mason-Hamlin grand piano resides temporarily at the Bayfield Presbyterian Church thanks to Port Wing (WI) musician and piano technician Tom Denker, denkerpiano.com.
This concert is sponsored in part by the Family of Mary Dobson and the Apostle Island Area Community Fund of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation. There is no admission charge, but free will offerings are encouraged and gratefully accepted. A modest reception follows the concert. Please call 715-682-3272 or 715-779-5490 for more information.
