Four Hands Are Better Than Two -- Schubert and Schumann in Song and Dance
"Summer (Mostly) Thursdays" continues with pianists Martha Fischer and William Lutes in a program of four-hand piano works and lieder by the two great Schu's of music. Franz Schubert's (1797-1828) songs and piano duets greatly influenced Robert Schumann (1810-1856); Schumann wrote his own first works for piano duet in 1828 in enthusiastic response to Schubert's. Martha and Bill will play and sing a potpourri of music exploring the relationship of these two musical kindred spirits.

Martha Fischer is Prof of Piano and head of the Collaborative Piano Program at UW Madison. She has performed with distinguished instrumentalists and vocalists both nationally and internationally. A singer as well as pianist, she has toured with her pianist husband Bill Lutes in programs of duo-piano literature, as well as a entertainment called "Innocent Merriment: Songs and Scenes from Gilbert and Sullivan".

Bill Lutes has an independent piano studio in Madison and is Artist-in-Residence at UW Madison where he serves as vocal coach for the University Opera program. For many years he was heard as classical music host on Wisconsin Public Radio, and has been a popular lecturer on music throughout the country. He has performed as solo pianist and chamber musician throughout the US.

Currently Martha and Bill are completing a recording of the complete works for two pianists by Robert Schumann.

This concert is sponsored in part by the Family of Mary Dobson and the Apostle Island Area Community Fund of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation. There is no admission charge, but free will offerings are encouraged and gratefully accepted.
