Summer (Mostly) Thursdays FAVORITES Betty Braunstein and Sam Black are joined by Twin Cities cellist Tim Perry for a program of music by French composers, among them:
Philipe Gaubert (1879-1941).
Flutist Betty Braunstein writes: "There is no flute player alive today without roots to Phillipe Gaubert or the Paris Conservatory and Paris Opera Orchestra where Gaubert worked as flutist, conductor, and composer extraordinaire. A quick look at the genealogical flute tree finds
that Michel Blavet taught and begot Felix Rault who taught and begot Francois Devienne
who in turn taught and begot Paul Taffanel. And it was Taffanel who developed the talent
of Phillipe Gaubert, who begot, among others, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and James Galway.
About 100 years after Gaubert's birth, Claude Bolling wrote his Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio for flutist Rampal. For tonight, Claude Bolling fits the bill, not only because he is alive and thriving in Paris, but because he knows that classical musicians sometimes need to escape from serious music -"s'evader des musique serieuses," and have some serious fun.
